The next show at the Deines Cultural Center is “The Peace of Places” from artist Tina Nipper-Hagley. The exhibit opens with a members-only appreciation reception on Sunday January 10 from 2:00-4:00 pm. The show will be up and open to the public through mid-February.

Born and raised in Nebraska, Tina Nipper-Hagley has deep roots in the Midwest. She received Art and Education degrees from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Omaha.

Watercolor is Tina’s primary medium, but she also works with acrylics and oils. At times, collage items are incorporated into her work. Nature, landscapes and life experiences are often inspirations, and she enjoys working with representational as well as abstracted imagery. Human interaction with the world and human impact on the natural environment are recurrent themes.

Of her work, Nipper-Hagley says “Perhaps, an important part of my message is that we are better off seeking a flexible, thoughtful balance with nature rather than attempting to control, divide and manipulate it. On a more basic level, I enjoy standing under a canopy of leaves, hearing the rustle, feeling the wind, or gazing to the horizon where sky meets earth. I try to express that multi-sensory experience visually and I hope that viewers may discover their own personal connection to my artwork.”

Tina has had her art exhibited at Nex-Tech, Botanica (Wichita Gardens), Bank of Hays, Deines Cultural Center, Hays Arts Center, Hays Medical Center, Hadley Center, Moss-Thorns Gallery and has had work accepted into the Kansas Watercolor Society National Show, Smoky Hill Art Exhibition and The Kansas Artist Postcard Series.

As an adjunct art Instructor, she teaches at Fort Hays State University part time. She also enjoys substituting in USD 489 and teaching individual art lessons. Tina is a member of the Artists at Work Studio in downtown Hays.

The opening for “The Peace of Places” will be followed by a private concert by blues artist Doug MacLeod for members of the Friends of the Deines Cultural Center. Anyone wishing to be a member of the Friends of the Deines Cultural Center may bring their membership dues to the opening or the concert. Individual memberships start at $25.

For the past 12 years, I have called Hays home and have contemplated the wide-open horizons of the High Plains. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, I have also lived in Ohio, Missouri, and Louisiana. Wherever I have lived or traveled, I have always been drawn to the country and the natural, wild places.

As far back as I can remember visual art has played an important role in my life. It was and is a source of pleasure and a means of relating to people and the world around me. I believe teaching art is a natural way to connect and contribute to society while enjoying my passion. I graduated from University of Nebraska at Kearney with a degree in Art Education. While teaching art in the Omaha Public Schools, I completed a Masters in Secondary Education with an emphasis in art. In Hays, I teach occasional adult and children’s classes for Hays Arts Council and am an adjunct art instructor at F.H.S.U.

Images of land, figures and nature are in many of my artworks. Through my art, I attempt to address how humans relate to nature, how humanity affects the earth and how the natural world influences our search for meaning in the universe. Although I strive for natural beauty and balance in my own artwork, not all is benign. Perhaps, an important part of my message is that we are better off seeking a flexible, thoughtful balance with nature rather than attempting to control, divide and manipulate it. On a more basic level, I enjoy standing under a canopy of leaves, hearing the rustle, feeling the wind, or gazing to the horizon where sky meets earth. I try to express that multi-sensory experience visually and I hope that viewers may discover their own personal connection to my artwork.

I am a member of the Artists @ Work Studio, and a participant in the Wednesday evening drawing sessions in Hays. Generally, I use watercolor, watercolor monotype, and mixed media. I also draw, paint with acrylics, and create assemblages. When not planning, teaching or creating, I am riding my bicycle and breathing in the scenery.
