Tribute to Trudy
The Deines Cultural Center is honoring former Russell art teacher Trudy Furney with “Tribute to Trudy”, the next exhibit at the Center. The show opens on Saturday, July 17, 2010 with a reception from 2:00 -4:00 pm and will run through August 25. “Tribute to Trudy” includes paintings by Furney herself along with works from her students who have gone on to careers in art or have continued in art as serious hobbyists. The exhibit includes one large acrylic painting by Pete Cocrhran which is a portrait of Furney. Trudy Furney was the art teacher at Russell High School from 1955 to 1985 and influenced many students, spurred their interest in and encouraged their pursuit of art. One former student remarked that “I always looked forward to her class. I learned a lot from Mrs. Furney, not just about art, but also about life.” Artists exhibiting in the tribute include: Sammy Baker, Gary Christie, Peter Cochran, Steve Ehrlich, Edna Giebler, Mike Gross, Bill Farmer, Eric Fowler, David Friday, Nancy Holland, Kaylee Karst, Gordon Mai, Martin Myers, Ada Niedenthal, Connie Witt Patterson, Craig Purdy, Jacqueline Marie Resley, Virginia Rohleder, Dale Schmitt, Lila Schmitt, Susan Shank, Rick Underwood, the late Larry Ward, and Henry Witt. Many community members have loaned works by Trudy Furney as well as art by her students from their personal collections for the show, represented in watercolor, oil, colored pencil, wood, acrylic, stone, fiber and mixed media and jewelry from throughout the United States and Africa. The Deines Cultural Center is located at 820 North Main in Russell, admission is free and the Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 1:30 – 5:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.
