Kaleidoscope of Color
The upcoming exhibit at the Deines Cultural Center in Russell is “Kaleidoscope of Color” featuring the paintings of Lindsborg artists Kenny Bridges and Mary Erickson and Manhattan based artist, Adene Winter. The show opens with a reception from 2-4 pm on August 30 and will be up through October 7. The paintings include oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolors and mixed media, including silk scarves with subject matter ranging from botanicals, figures, landscapes and portraits. Kenny Bridges was born and raised in Russell, the youngest of twelve children. His mother, Catherine “Katie” Spaed Bridges, began painting at age 75. A number of her children and grandchildren also paint, carve and design. In 1996, the Bridges family was featured in “A Family Affair” at the Deines Cultural Center. Kenny began painting in the late 1970’s, after receiving a birthday gift of oil paints. He took several workshops from Skip Elliott of Taos, New Mexico. The greatest influence on his painting comes from his oldest sister, Helen and his niece. With their encouragement he began painting with acrylics, watercolor, and silk painting, Today, watercolor is his primary medium. Kenny currently lives and paints in Lindsborg where his wife Mary serves the Messiah Lutheran Church. He retired from Sprint in 2001, and currently serves as President of the Lindsborg Lions Club. Mary Erickson is proprietor of Erickson’s Art Corner, a fine arts gallery in Lindsborg. Erickson works primarily in pastel and oil. The artist’s bright colors and impressionistic style are discernible in both mediums, whether her subject is a Colorado or Kansas landscape, a portrait, or a figure painting. Erickson’s paintings have won many awards. She is a charter member of the Pastel Society of Colorado, a juried member of the Pastel Society of America, and a member of the Mid-America Pastel Society. Mary Erickson has been the featured artist in a number of one-woman shows, including exhibits in Colorado, Lindsborg and Wichita. She has a show of her Swedish dancer paintings slated to open October 2 at the Sandzen Gallery in Lindsborg. Manhattan artist Adene Winter has been painting since the early 1970s. She has taught entry level drawing and watercolor to all ages including summer classes for children and workshops for experienced adult artists. She has paintings in many private collections around the U.S. Winter says, “Making art has helped me more clearly see and appreciate the beauty and subtle nuances of the world around me. I particularly enjoy the history of old buildings, the magic of the plains and of towering mountains, and the beauty of even the smallest everyday object.” The Deines Cultural Center is open Monday through Friday from 12:30 – 5:30 and Saturday and Sunday from 1 -5 pm. The Center is accessible to those with disabilities.

Erickson studied art at Wichita State University and Mesa State College in Colorado. She has taken numerous workshops from leading artists, including Doug Dawson, Lorenzo Chavez, Albert Handell, Carole Katchen, Ramon Kelley, and Sally Strand.
