The monthly jam session and pot luck held at the Deines Cultural Center will focus on the current exhibit, “New Harmonies: A Celebration of American Roots Music” this Sunday, June 15th. The public is invited to attend at 820 N. Main in Russell.
Dr. Steven Kite, assistant professor of history at Fort Hays State University will speak at 3:00 pm and explore what music makes up American roots music and how roots music reflects America’s development. Kite who received his PhD from Oklahoma State University has a special interest in music history, plays music himself and has attended jam sessions at the Deines Center.
After Kite’s talk, pickin’ and jammin’ begins, followed by a covered dish supper with more music after dinner. Participants are asked to bring a dish to share and their own table service.
Kite’s appearance and the New Harmonies exhibit is made possible at the Deines Cultural Center by the Kansas Humanities Council.New Harmonies is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.
