Riverbend Five Dixieland Band
From Great Bend, Kansas

Location: Cecil Bricker Park

The Riverbend Five Dixieland Band plays music from various periods of early jazz and Dixieland, taking the listener on a journey through the boisterous swinging era of early jazz music with historical notes and standard music of the era.

Riverbend Five Dixieland Band is comprised of musicians from the city band of Great Bend:

  • Joe Boley, trombone, retired band director from the Great Bend school system, has extensive experience playing with groups in the area.

  • JB Webster, trumpet, retired Barton County Community College band director, performed with many dance bands in Hays, groups in Great Bend and other communities.

  • Kurtis Koch, percussion, band director at Great Bend Middle School and director of the Great Bend City Band, is a graduate of Russell High School.

  • Jeff Underwood, brass and electric bass, graduated from Kansas University with a music teaching degree, played with many band organizations in the Lawrence,Kansas and Great Bend area.

  • Charlie Moyers, saxophone and clarinet, assistant band director for Great Bend USD 428, played professionally with several name bands and shares his talents by performing with many ensembles in the area.

  • Steve Lueth, piano, former Russell High School band director, is now the band director at Barton County Community College.

New Harmonies has been made possible in Russell, Kansas by the Kansas Humanities Council.

New Harmonies is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.
