October 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Deines Cultural Center. In honor of the date, the Center is hosting an exhibit, concert and reception. The entire collection of wood engraving prints by E. Hubert Deines will be on display through the end of the year. Displaying for the first time in the 20-year history of the Deines Cultural Center wood blocks completed but not printed and partially completed which show the different stages of the process of wood engraving by E. Hubert Deines. The collection of wood blocks includes scenes from Russell, Rooks and Saline counties.
The November 7th event includes a concert by Anne Zimmerman who sings the prairie into universal language with her voice, guitar, and piano. Her music celebrates the joy, sorrow, grandeur and silliness of life on the windy plains. She tells stories and paints brilliantly-colored and unexpected portraits with her words.
With this anniversary event, The Friends of the Deines Cultural Center membership year is shifting. From now on, the membership year will run November 1 to November 1 and the annual membership/anniversary reception and art opening will be in October/November instead of January.
Anyone who is currently a member, and would like to continue their membership through 2011, is asked to renew at this time. Membership is open to all and Nancy Selbe, director of the Deines Cultural Center is encouraging everyone to consider membership as a way to help keep the arts alive on the High Plains. Membership levels start at $25.00, are tax deductible, and membership cards are available at the center.
In addition to the gift of a concert and the opening of the print exhibit, new and renewing members will receive a reproduction of an E. Hubert Deines print suitable for framing.
Partial funding for the Center comes from a grant from the Kansas Arts Commission, a state agency and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
The Deines Cultural Center is located at 820 North Main in Russell, admission is free and the Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 12:30- 5:30 pm, Saturday and Sunday 1:00 5:00. The Center is accessible to those with disabilities.
