Exhibit: Oct. 23 - Nov. 30, 2011
Reception: Sunday, Oct. 23, 2-4 pm
Canines and Otherwise is the upcoming exhibit at the Deines Cultural Center. It begins this Sunday with an artist’s reception from 2-4 pm at the Center. The reception and exhibit is open to the public. The show runs through November 30th.
Wichita artist Elaine Clampitt is the artist of Canines and Otherwise. An artist for some time, four years ago she carved out time to paint fulltime. She was looking for subjects to challenge her skills in paint.
In the end, she determined portraits of people, dogs, birds, flowers and motion were the most challenging. She got stuck at dogs. She painted people. But she has yet to paint through her list, as dogs have proven to be a challenging subject of interest to her and to others.
“An Elaine style” has become clearer through work on more than 200 canvases. She uses an expressionistic style to evoke moods or ideas in balance with representational imagery. She uses anthropomorphism, “attributing to dogs the feelings, thoughts and desires that people use to describe themselves” in her work.
Clampitt has made special preparations for her show in Russell. She says, “I studied the work of E. Hubert Deines. His work is truly amazing. In a post mortem way, I collaborated with Mr. Deines to create a few paintings. I’m feeling his influence and wonder if those attending my show will sense it, too.
And adds, “I invite you to engage with my paintings and talk to me about what you see or how they make you feel. I’ll be listening and learning about the paintings from you, the characters at the show.”
